Google Analytics in AdMob helps mobile app developer Eltsoft go global

Cross-posted on the Google Analytics blog

Since April 2014, Google Analytics has been fully available in AdMob, and now app developers are increasingly seeing results by combining data from both platforms. Heres one story that illustrates the power of AdMob and Google Analytics together.

Passion for languages and learning

Jason Byrne, and business partner Robert Diem, are passionate about making a difference in education. They came together during their time as professors in Japan to found Eltsoft LLC, a company that builds mobile language learning apps for iOS and Android. Together, they started creating a series of fun tools that allow users to study whenever they want, wherever they are.

Global expansion

Their most popular app is English Grammar, which has been downloaded by more than a million people looking to sharpen their English-language skills in nearly 120 countries.

All of the companys apps are available for free or as paid versions. To increase revenue, they chose AdMob to earn money from the free versions of their apps with advertising. AdMob monetization is central to our success because it delivers high-quality, appropriate ads to our audience in their native languages, wherever they live, says Jason.

The Google Analytics data within AdMob helped them understand more about their users. "Our app, English Grammar, has users from all around the world, so we turned to data from Google Analytics and AdMob to understand which languages we should consider for localization. For example, we knew we had to prioritize German and French, but we discovered other languages that we didn't expect, such as Russian and Japanese."

A data-driven approach to marketing

Eltsoft uses data to focus their marketing campaigns and assess where to use their resources most effectively. Google Analytics keeps making campaign analysis simpler and clearer, Jason says. Data from various sources - Google Analytics and Google Play, for instance - are now all in one place. That helps me understand whats happening with our ad campaigns.

While data analysis helped Eltsoft validate some of their hypotheses, it also uncovered opportunities according to Jason: The greatest takeaway for me is that the results are never really what I expect. I am often surprised. Analytics has given us great insights into who our users are, and has provided a very important lesson in the value of surveying our user base. Our simple assumptions are often inaccurate.

Replicating successful strategies

Eltsoft has developed a way to calculate the value of users by using a combination of AdMob metrics (like ad request values) and Analytics metrics (like user counts and sessions per user). Having Google Analytics in AdMob has unlocked such analysis because the data is available in the same interface.

As a result, Eltsoft can now understand what works best for their users. For example, weve made changes to our apps, and Analytics has really helped us to track the effectiveness of those changes. I would say six months ago, that our success was a mystery. The data said we were doing well, but the whys were not clear. Therefore, we couldnt replicate or push forward. But today, we understand whats happening and can project our future success. We have not only the data, but can control certain variables allowing us to understand that data.

Google Analytics data is literally a goldmine, says Jason.

If you want to learn more about how Eltsoft is using Google Analytics and AdMob, download the full case study.

Official AdMob video: implement interstitial ads in the right way to earn more revenue

When monetizing an app with ads, you want to make sure that youre implementing them in the right way to create a positive user experience. AdMob developers, such as Raon Games, are discovering that interstitial ads are an effective way to monetize. These are full-screen ads appearing at natural transition points in an app.

However, with poor interstitial ad implementations, it's possible to see an increase in accidental clicks. This happens most often when users are not expecting an interstitial ad to appear on the screen (for example, in the middle of a game or on an exit screen). Sometimes we see poor implementations leading us to refund advertisers and disable ad serving until the issue is fixed.

Learn to implement interstitial ads the right way by watching our new best practice video.

Helping users find mobile-friendly pages

(Originally posted on the Google Webmaster Central Blog)

Have you ever tapped on a Google Search result on your mobile phone, only to find yourself looking at a page where the text was too small, the links were tiny, and you had to scroll sideways to see all the content? This usually happens when the website has not been optimized to be viewed on a mobile phone.

This can be a frustrating experience for our mobile searchers. Starting today, to make it easier for people to find the information that theyre looking for, were adding a mobile-friendly label to our mobile search results.

This change will be rolling out globally over the next few weeks. A page is eligible for the mobile-friendly label if it meets the following criteria as detected by Googlebot:
  • Avoids software that is not common on mobile devices, like Flash
  • Uses text that is readable without zooming
  • Sizes content to the screen so users don't have to scroll horizontally or zoom
  • Places links far enough apart so that the correct one can be easily tapped
If you want to make sure that your page meets the mobile-friendly criteria:
The tools and documentation above are currently available in English. They will be available in additional languages within the next few weeks.

We see these labels as a first step in helping mobile users to have a better mobile web experience. We are also experimenting with using the mobile-friendly criteria as a ranking signal.

If you have any questions or want to help others make mobile-friendly sites, visit our Webmaster Help Forum. We hope to see many more mobile-friendly websites in the future. Lets make the web better for all users!

Top 3 Strategies App Developers Can Use to Maximize Success this Holiday Season

Theres nothing like the excitement of unwrapping gifts on the holidays. More and more often those gifts are shiny new devices ready to be filled up with apps. At family gatherings, we pull out our phones and share photos and videos and recommend our favorite apps. So its not surprising that the holiday season has meant big business for app developers. But just how big, and how can you be ready?

Its big
"With the holiday season upon us, app marketers have a tremendous opportunity to capture new users by jumping on the surge in downloads", said Marcos Sanchez, VP Global Corporate Communications for App Annie. "If last year is an indicator, it would be no surprise if we see a doubling in the number of downloads from Google Play in the US."

Cloud and mobile testing firm SOASTA reported that 3 in 10 mobile device owners were planning to download an app on December 25th of last year. Millennials were the most likely age group to say they would download an app that day, with 47% planning on it.*
*http://www.emarketer.com/Article/App-Downloads-Nearly-Doubled-on-Christmas-Day/1010508#sthash.9jwl3sGD.dpuf

Be ready with a winning strategy

Proper planning across the entire app workflow will help you reach this app-hungry audience. Here are the top 3 strategies for making the most of this peak time:

#1 Customize your app for the holidays
  • Small changes, like changing the background or app icon, can have a big revenue impact.
  • The more you customize for the holiday, the more likely your app will be highlighted in app stores. For instance, change to holiday colors or themes in your design.
  • Create multiple versions of your apps and target each version based on regions that celebrate the holiday vs. ones that do not.
#2 Plan ahead to ride the traffic wave
  • Be prepared for big traffic spikes so that you can capitalize on them make sure to create and implement a load balancing plan, with an additional contingency plan in case systems get overwhelmed.
  • Keep approval periods in mind when scheduling and publishing app updates iOS has a manual review process with a ~2 week approval period, so submit ahead of time to be ready for December.
  • Dont do any new feature releases around peak times until theyve been thoroughly tested with so much competition during peak periods, you dont want the user's first experience with your app to be buggy.
  • If you do have to launch, do vigorous testing first use one of Googles various A/B testing services for Android apps to help with this.
  • It doesnt end at Christmas Day it's great to get the download at Christmas, but what happens after is just as important. As more users come online and download apps, ad impressions increase through January. Consider optimizing the ad experience during that time and focus on retaining those users.
#3 Monetize, monetize, monetize!
  • Implement smart banners to optimize the size of ads that display across devices and various screen sizes to ensure higher click-through conversion rates.
  • When you drive more users, your rankings will go up, which will allow you to earn more through ads and in-app purchases. If you have a paid app, consider discounting or offering your app for free during the holiday season app download and engagement is highest during the holidays.
  • Integrate interstitials Developers tend to see good ad revenue growth when they implement interstitial ads, as seen by Raon Games with their game, Bouncy Ball. They achieved a 30% revenue growth even with a limited use of CPC interstitials.

Implement as many of these best practices as possible and youll be ready for the holiday rush. To find out more about optimizing your apps, visit our Help Center. Be sure to tweet your holiday app wins to @AdMob.

If you want to grow your website and your ad revenue, you need to understand your audience. Google Analytics is a powerful tool that helps you better understand your site visitors and define the right strategy for your site.

We've recently improved how Google Analytics links to your AdSense account, making it easier than ever to understand what's working on your site. With this new update, you can link your AdSense account within Google Analytics in fewer steps and can also link your AdSense account to multiple Google Analytics accounts.

If you havent linked Google Analytics with your AdSense account yet, its a good time to learn more about your audience. Linking these accounts can help you:

  • Optimize your website: Identify opportunities across traffic sources, geographies, devices, pages and browsers.
  • Improve user experience: See which pages are popular among your visitors and which pages drive them away. Understanding where your visitors attention is focused will also help you to place your ads where users are most likely to look at them.
  • Grow revenue: Make changes based on how earnings are affected by aspects of user behaviour such as visit frequency and page depth.
Learn how to link Google Analytics with your AdSense account in our Help Center and start identifying revenue opportunities. If you dont have a Google Analytics account, you can easily set up your account now.

As always, wed love to hear your feedback. Tell us what you think and share your insights from Google Analytics in the comment section below this post.

A more mobile-friendly look for text ads on the Google Display Network

Readability and appearance are essential elements of a positive mobile user experience. With that in mind, weve made some changes to the design of our text ads on the Google Display Network.

The title and description in the new text ads will now be easier for your mobile users to read. Your site visitors will be able to quickly understand what the ad is about because the ad description will be more prominent. In addition, the ad format will give them a more interactive experience, letting them swipe across or click on the dot to see the advertiser website URL.

Be on the look out for our new text ads and tell us what you think of this redesign over on our AdSense +page.

New control filters in the Ad review center

Many of you currently use the Ad review center to view and control the ads displayed on your website. You've recently told us you'd like to see more options to search for specific ads. Today we're launching two new filters which will give you even more control.

Find ads that look similar
When you identify an ad that you want to block, you can choose to find related ads, e.g., ads that have the same landing page or advertiser. We've enhanced this feature, so that now when you run a "related ads" search, you'll also see ads that look similar too. This filter can help save you time looking for similar ads to allow or block.

Filter ads by language
If your website is international in scope, ads on your website can show in different languages. Now you can filter ads running on your site by language in the Ad review center. For example, you could choose to see all Spanish-language ads that have shown in the last 30 days.
Youll find more information in the Help Center on how to search for ads in the Ad review center. Wed love to hear your feedback and suggestions in the comment section below.

With 1.5 million terms, kotobank allows users to look up words in over 100 dictionaries at the same time. With such range of content categories, this online service started using AdSense in 2012 to target its users with the advertising they want to see.
Mr Kazuyuki Uchiyama, kotobank Business Development Manager

This partnership soon led to positive results, with kotobanks revenue growing by 200%. Paired for success: An extended workforce for De-online.ru

Welcome to the second part of Paired for success, a blog series dedicated to the stories of publishers and Certified Partners who have joined forces to get the most out of Google AdSense.

When Dimitriy was getting ready for his move to Germany, he collected a range of learning materials about its language, culture and traditions. Thats why in 2010 he decided to share his knowledge with others and to set up De-online.ru, a portal with a wealth of useful information about all things German. Since the early days, Google AdSense has been part of De-online.ru growth.
De-online.ru is managed by a small team. It was this lack of in-house resources that led Dimitriy to approach YoulaMedia, an advertising agency and Google AdSense Certified Partner based in Saint Petersburg, Russia.

YoulaMedia quickly tackled Dimitriys challenge: increase De-Online.ru advertising earnings without impairing their users experience. This partnership exceeded Dimitriys expectations, and he can now invest more time in creating interesting, high-quality content.

Paired for success: Healthy advertising revenues for NetDoktor.de

A few months ago we introduced the Google AdSense Certified Partner Program to connect publishers with recognized consultants who can help them make the most of their AdSense accounts. Since then, hundreds of publishers had their AdSense accounts set up, optimized and managed by these accredited businesses, freeing up their time to focus on creating great content. Over the next weeks, well share with you some of these stories of shared success.

NetDoktor.de is a leading German health portal offering medical information explained in laymans terms about diseases, symptoms, research and medications. They started using Google AdSense five years ago, but soon realised that they lacked the in-house expertise to make the best use of it.
It was then that they decided to approach Click Performance Group, a Google AdSense Certified Partner specializing in AdSense consulting. The partnership soon led to positive results, boosting NetDoktor.des revenue by 150% through account optimization and ongoing experiments.

NetDoktor.de can now focus on editorial tasks and their service offering, knowing that the management of their AdSense account is in good hands with a Google AdSense Certified Partner.
